Subtraction of Algebraic Expression

Subtraction of Algebraic Expressions: To subtract an algebraic expression from another , we change the signs ( from  '+' to '-' or from '-' to '+' ) of all the terms of the expression which is to be subtracted and then we add the two expressions.

Example: ;Subtract; (-2y^{2} + frac{1}{2}y - 3) ;from ;(4y^{2} - 2y - 5)

Solution         The required difference is given by

                     (4y^{2} - 2y - 5 ) - (-2y^{2} + frac{1}{2}y - 3)

                     =4y^{2} - 2y - 5 + 2y^{2} - frac{1}{2} y + 3

                     =;4y^{2} + 2y^{2} - 2y - frac{1}{2} y -5 + 3

                      =(4 + 2 ) y^{2} + ( -2 - frac{1}{2}) y -2

                      =6y^{2} - frac{5}{2} y -2
